Autism: Heart of Angels by Graham Miller

GSPAP The Greek Society for Protection of Autistic people established the only full time residency for adults affected by severe autism in Greece in 2001. Referred to as ‘children’, yet aged between 26 and 42 years, the residents cannot speak and are affected by other conditions. One child is also blind and deaf. The photographer spent several days living there to assess the impact of the financial crisis on those least able to protect themselves.

European funding supports the residency, that is due to expire at the end of 2015.  Despite this concern and the fact that the staff regularly experience periods of not being paid they continue to be totally dedicated to the care and development of those living at ‘Eleni Gyra’. He also spent time at a day centre in Athens.

The work is now available for exhibition and publication.
